If you have been looking at rain collection and ideas for recycling rainwater from your gutters, you already know there are many shapes and sizes of rain barrels available, from simple plastic trash cans to very fancy wooden wine or whiskey barrels. All of the different designs allow you to do one thing: catch free rain water from your gutter’s downspouts (or grey water from your home) and recycle it around your outdoor plants and garden areas.
Many areas of the country are in the middle of a drought. Some areas have eased the outdoor watering restrictions and what little rain we do get seems to vanish very quickly. Take advantage of that precious, chemical free, rain and keep all that water from becoming runoff and washing down into your sewer. Your plants will thank you…It’s the “organic” option for plant food. You will not have to feel guilty about having a beautiful garden this summer. I have even seen people route PVC pipes all around their yard for garden irrigation or just to irrigate one or two areas.
I have one area in my backyard that floods every time it rains. I simply installed a rain barrel under that downspout. Now, I have a free source of water for my backyard plants and I can direct any overflow water completely away from the problem area.
If you have any questions, suggestions or comments about water conservation or would like to know more, please email me. I would be glad to help you create, design or build your own rain barrel.
